The Trouble with Asbestos

We hear about asbestos all the time; buildings are contaminated with it, people get sick from it, but just exactly what is it? Asbestos is actually a naturally occurring group of substances. All are microscopic, flexible, fire-resistant fibers. Therefore, asbestos is usually added to products to strengthen, give heat insulation and/or provide fire resistance. Normally asbestos is combined or mixed with something else that binds it, like glue or another adhesive so it is not released into the air. If by chance it does become airborne, asbestos becomes highly dangerous. If it is inhaled, it will remain in the lungs for a long period of time, causing severe health problems. The most serious is asbestosis which is a scarring of the lungs. This may lead to breathing problems, heart failure or even lung cancer. Asbestos workers frequently develop asbestosis, especially before the dangers were realized.

All in all there are about 3,000 products containing asbestos. Some common products that contain asbestors include building insulation, brake pads and linings, pot holders, ironing boards, hair dyes, textured paints, toasters and many other household items. Since the asbestos is combined with other materials within these items, it is safe. However, if the fibers become lose, there is some hazard. This can happen if the product becomes damaged, or it frequently occurs during remodeling; like if paint and floor tiles are sanded or cut.
